NILS (No Interest Loan Scheme) Eligibility NILS is a community-based program offering applicants on a low income no interest loans to the value of up to $1,200 for essential household goods and services. You may be eligible for a NILS loan if the following apply to you: you are on a low income and in receipt of a current Health Care Card you need to purchase an essential item you have lived at your current address for 3 months or longer you can repay the loan over a 12-18 month period Essential items include (but are not restricted to) the following: Fridge Washing machine Heater Microwave Clothes dryer Television Computer Bed and/or mattress Vacuum cleaner NILS loans are not available for items such as: Bond money, rent or rent arrears Living expenses or utility bills Existing debt This information comes from Financial Counselling (Vic) and Good Shepherd Microfinance.
